It strikes me as an irony that the idea of this post came to me at 11:27 pm. Exactly the topic I'm going to be addressing today! Late sleepers and the problem of it!
There's a famous quotation in the context of sleep according to ayurveda. It basically states that staying awake at night causes dryness to increase, whereas sleeping during the daytime results in excess unction/lubrication/moisture of sorts in the body. At this point I was wondering that they would then just cancel each other out! We could just stay up endlessly and compensate for it in the day with naps and a good long siesta.
But here's where the thinking is flawed. In the sense that you sleep in the day- form excess of this moisture content in the body. The body doesn't use up the excess, This now just gets deposited and stored in different parts of the body. Then you stay up continuously and keep increasing the drying faculty. This now acts on those stored portions causing beautiful niduses for the next process. - Inflammation!
You would have to add a little of the heat to get kickstarted- but we've got enough of deep fried, oil dripping vadas or few cupfuls of curd everyday, or even just that pent-up anger and stress from work to give you that pinch of heat to set things moving.
Do it for long enough and BANG - you've got yourself some wonderful starters like that sourdough starter you named Lakshmi. Except here, instead of some good ol bread you've set yourself up for some stiff joints, painful knees, massage craving shoulders and bleary eyes.
Let's see which population in this age is most likely to start facing repercussions of all those midnight outings in college! Yup, It's the current millennial boomers who have jeopardized/ continue to put themselves on the stake and burn for the sake of a temporary high/ worktime pressure.
So what can we do? Is there an out?
Yes and No.
We can manage for a while with sleeping for half the time lost during the night, ON AN EMPTY STOMACH! Or we can change our lifestyles, prioritize joint wellness and cardiac health over the late night binges.
Ciao then! Shubharatri!
